THANK YOU!

Dear Kindergarten Families, We hope you're having a wonderful break, whether you're staying close or traveling.  The two of us are both enjoying our time away from school and the opportunity to turn the major focus of our attention to other parts of our lives. Still, you are in our thoughts, and very fondly so.  Thank you for the Chanukah gifts!  We love the glasses and "planning juice" and we appreciate the Amazon gift cards.  Most of all, we appreciate this chance to get to know your children and all of you, as well.  Our students are blessed with parents who care about them deeply, give them abundant opportunities, and teach them, by example, how to be vital parts of a community .  We are truly humbled and honored to be partnering with you in their Kindergarten experience.   We are having an amazing year, full of learning, laughter and gratitude.  ...

Mission: Mars Rover

Today was our Engineering Design Day. Always a school favorite, the kids design a vehicle capable of landing a rover (i.e. raw egg) safely on alien territory. Given a limited number of resources, the kids collaborate to construct and test prototypes. We were lucky to be joined at the beginning of the day by Jason Soderblum, Rashi parent and space scientist, who created a presentation for the students to teach them more about Mars and the rovers. His presentation included many cool facts, and even cooler photographs, and the kids were captivated. The word of the day was WONDER. It was an inspiring way to move us into our challenge.  As you can see, we were a happy and engaged bunch of learners. The highlight, which is the actual egg drop, was well attended by Rashi teachers, staff, and administrators. The challenge is legendary, and a crowd pleaser every time.  We had ample opportunity to discuss the design process, and most notably the importance of the "ask" and...

Imagine, Plan, Create and Test... Then Repeat!

For Design Day, we had our Kindergartners create oak tag roofs for shoe box houses and test them to see if they could withstand a "snow load."  Please click on the link below to see our Kindergartners creating, testing and improving their roof designs. https://photos.app.goo.gl/ob2pk66KGBi8KZJt1 Shabbat Shalom and may 2018 be filled with lots of learning, joy and love! - Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Liptz -

Week of December 18, 2017: First Grade Abraham/ Gulman

First Grade engineers designed shelters to protect their homemade "critters."  The critters were made of pipe cleaners and UV-sensitive beads.  Every child succeeded in preventing their critter from changing colors  when exposed to the UV rays of the sun (even on a cloudy day.)
