January 27-31, 2020 This week the first graders were readers, listeners, writers, respectful audience members mathematicians, agents for change, and artists. Read on to learn more about some of the highlights from the past week!  Language Arts: This week during FUNdations blocks we learned the trick words what,   when , who, where, there and here and we added a new word of the day "ducks" and talked about its multiple meanings. We also read in small guided reading groups and did center work that included the suffix "s", and creating short stories from Story Cards. During writing, the first graders added transition words and supply lists to their "how-to" books.  Ask your first grader: Which four transition words did you add and why do we add transition words to our writing?  Math: This week in math the first graders spent more time with fractions, specifically 1/2 and 1/4, understanding what they represent and how to wr

You Can Always Make... Stone Soup!

Hello Families, We had a great week preparing for and presenting our play, Stone Soup.  Kol Hakavod to all of our young actors and actresses.  We are so proud of their tenacity in learning their roles.  Their performance was delightful!  If anyone has good pictures, we'd love to add them to our blog! This week Kindergartners finished writing their research reports!  Each student chose an animal and learned about its appearance, what it eats, and how it adapts to New England winters.  We'll send these reports home this week so you can enjoy and kvell.  A lot of careful work was involved in creating these beautiful reports!  Students drew and wrote in a style that was informative and applied learned conventions of correct case and punctuation.  Kol Hakavod again, Kindergartners! We were also excited to meet with more of Rashi's Middle Schoolers to learn about two other  Tamchui organizations, Boston vs. Bullies and Marine Mammals of Maine.  Please see our photo album

Our Giant Game Board!

As we wrap up our study of ancient Egypt, students took part in an innovations game on Friday. Each group of three students focused on a specific innovation or invention from Egypt and then designed a piece of a giant game board. Each group asked questions to their classmates to quiz them on the new information they were teaching. The game was a success as lots of new information was learned and everyone had a fun time! Innovations included pyramids, papyrus, math, shaduf, hieroglyphs, and calendar.

Middle school students taught us about an animal welfare organization and a mental health organization. Both second graders and middle schoolers were at their best and had a great time together. We began our week as we do every week with a lovely time at Tefillah.                                                                                                       Middle School students taught us about the organization Brothers for Life, which helps veterans with their physical and mental health.                                                                                                                                                                     We learned what it might feel like if you could no longe
