Kindergarten Social Justice - Filling Each Others' Buckets

Kindergarten Social Justice: Have You Filled a Bucket Today?

By Stephanie Rotsky, Social Justice Coordinator

Building upon our High Holiday lesson a few weeks ago about how our actions and words can have a positive DOMINO EFFECT on others, we introduced the concept of what it might mean to fill up each other's invisible bucket and our own invisible bucket daily.

We began by thinking about being born with an empty bucket and gave examples of how our parents are our first "bucket fillers" in our lives. Students said: They give us love, feed us, hold us, change our diapers, make us laugh, care about us, hug us and make sure we are safe.

Here are my parents bringing me home from the hospital after I was born. This is the first photo of me (all cuddled up in my blanket) with my parents. I feel so blessed that they were my first bucket fillers in my life!

Next students were invited to think about a recent real example in their lives when they helped fill up someone else's bucket.

Each student was then called up to the water tub and shared his/her example followed by filling up the green bucket with some water.

Ask your children to share their examples of how they and their classmates have already filled up other people's buckets since school started. You will be inspired for sure!

When everyone shared their examples of being bucket fillers, Mrs. O. came forward and shared her personal example of filling up her family's bucket and her own bucket when she had everyone to her home for Rosh Hashanah dinner. Her example made our class bucket overflow!

Here's to a happy, sweet and peaceful new year filled with overflowing buckets for everyone!
