What's New in Grade Two: 9/25-9/28

This week's blogger is Shayna!

Our First Visit to Newbridge:
This week, we went to Newbridge. We read a book about pumpkins. In the book, the people took the seeds out of the pumpkins and they sorted them by 2s, 5s, and 10s to count them. After we read the book, we went to Newbridge. With the residents, we sorted the seeds. We had to each give the number of seeds our pumpkins had. In the afternoon when we finished the book, we found out that the littlest pumpkin had the most seeds (around 378). Pumpkins have more seeds if they stay on the vine longer and if the pumpkin has more lines on the outside, which makes it have more seeds. Darker pumpkins stay on the vine longer too and can have more seeds.

Favorite Book This Week:
My favorite book so far this week is Leopold. We read it aloud as a class. In the book, Ben didn't want to go to soccer practice because he's not good at sports. In the end, Ben tried soccer out and he loved it, and he even scored a goal. Ben had a fixed mindset in the beginning, but a growth mindset at the end.

Snack in the Sukkah:
My favorite part of having snack in the sukkah for Sukkot was that we got to go outdoors and enjoy nature.

Book Group Jobs:
My favorite book group job is Mind Reader. The Mind Reader reads the main character's minds in the stories and makes smart guesses of what the character is thinking.

First Second Grade STEM Project:
We did a STEM project this week. We worked together in partners with the other second grade class. The problem was that a farmer grew small pumpkins every year and the pumpkins that were left on the ground would get eaten by animals and insects. We had to find a way to elevate the pumpkins off the ground (our desks) so they wouldn't get eaten. We had to come up with two solutions. My partner and I rolled up a paper tube and tested it, and the pumpkin stayed off the desk. We also built a scarecrow out of a clothes pin, a cotton ball, and a Q-tip to scare off any insects or animals. One of our other designs had a folded piece of paper with cotton balls on top. The pumpkin sat on top of the cotton balls. I enjoyed working with a partner, but I also like to be independent to think of ideas and test them out right away.

Favorite Part of the Week:
My favorite part of the week was making cards for people in Israel.
