First Grade Social Justice - The Brothers' Promise and Rodeph Shalom

First Grade Social Justice Focus:
The Brothers' Promise by Frances Harber

by Stephanie Rotsky

Last week's social justice "treasure" was the story The Brothers' Promise by Frances Harber. To get ready for this story, we talked about who had brothers and who had sisters and then students made predictions - based on the title of the book and the cover illustration - what they thought the brothers might have promised their dad. At the start of the story, we find out that the brothers' promise was in three parts. Ask your child what was the three part promise? Were the brothers able to keep their promise at the end of the story? How do we know that the brothers loved each other very much and loved their dad?

Next I shared with the students these photos of my three brothers and my dad and shared a little bit about them and how much I love them.

Then I introduced the mitzvah of Rodeph Shalom - pursuing peace/going after peace.

After we read the story, students created their own "picture frame" of their families and thought abouty how they create peace in their homes with their families...
