What's New in Grade Two: 10/15-10/19

This week we have two bloggers, Emily and Benjamin!

Science
Emily: This week we learned about the brain and all the parts of it, like the amygdala, cerebellum, cerebrum, and brain stem. One fact is that if you're trying to complete a task, your brain makes pathways through neurons. Today we made models of our neural pathways.

Benjamin:
The amygdala means almond. I'm both left brained and right brained because I like music and I'm a good artist, but I also really like reading and math.

Reading and Book Groups
Emily: We're reading The One and Only Stuey Lewis in my book group. It's about a boy named Stuey Lewis who doesn't know how to read. This week, some of my book group jobs were Visualizer, Bridge Builder, and Feelings Detective. My favorite book that I read this week is called Magic Puppy. My favorite part of the day is DEAR time when I can read my book, and my favorite part of the week is getting to go to Art class.

Benjamin: My favorite part of the book is when Stuey keeps secrets but the author still tells us, so the readers know more than the characters. My favorite character is Stuey. My favorite book that I've read in the past two weeks was our last book group book, Mrs. Noodlekugel. It had a lot of details and it was fun to read. My favorite character was the talking cat, Mr. Fuzzface.

Writer's Workshop
Emily: I'm working on a book I want to call House Pets. It's going to be about all the dogs I dog-sit, and all my hermit crabs.

Benjamin: This week I published my story about Natick Days. I really liked sharing my story with the class. Now, I'm writing a story about the fort room in the back of my house.

This week, we did a self-control activity involving bubbles. In the first picture, students reacted to the bubbles however they wanted. In the second picture, students were encouraged to use a strategy to calm their bodies and not touch the bubbles.
