Building Empathy By Understanding Our Differences

Image
Fifth grade students took part in an inspiring morning learning about the Autism Spectrum, or AS, as part of the Understanding Our Differences program. We are grateful to our parent volunteers who led activities that gave our students a better understanding of what life can be like, including various challenges, for people with AS. At the end of the program we heard from a person in his 20's who is on the Autism Spectrum. He spoke about his experience and then he answered questions. Autism affects people in different ways, and as our speaker shared with our students, "when you've met one person with Autism, you've met one person with Autism."

Learning about Israel

Learning About Israel This week the first graders learned more about the amazing cities and important sites in Israel. We looked at many pictures and had a wonderful conversation about the landscape of this precious land as well as important landmarks. The first graders created their own illustrations of these landmarks.

Mesopotamia and More Anne Glanz and Sharon Packer November 29, 2018 It was a packed 4-day week in 5th grade! In Language Arts, we worked on understanding the elements of a short story by working in a group to create an ending for a story called "Hide and Seek". Students were quite creative in their solutions to Gabe and Libby's problem! In Social Studies, we explored the elements of a civilization, learned about the Babylonian and Assyrian empires, and learned about two particular legacies of Mesopotamia, written language and Hammurabi's Code. Finally, we compared Hammurabi's Code to relevant pieces of the Torah. In particular, "an eye for an eye" idea appears in both, with a slightly different twist in each. A special treat this week was our Understanding Our Differences program on Wednesday where we learned about Autism Spectrum Disorders (a special thank you to our parent volunteers: Susan Wilk, Lisa Sussman, and Sarah Fleckner). End of November Fun

During Social Studies, First Graders worked together to outline and paint a large mural of Israel. Next week we will be labeling major Cities on our map.        First Graders learned about the Thanksgiving story while making a bracelet with different color beads on it. Ask your child what the different colors on their bracelet means.   We also wrote different reasons we are thankful on strips of paper, then turned them into pumpkin centerpieces for Thanksgiving.   During Jewish Studies last week, students learned that Jacob's name was changed to Israel. Each student decorated a nameplate with their name meaning. Look for your child's name plate on their lockers! While learning about the map of Israel, students made 3-D maps showing grassy, salty, water and sandy regions. We finished the story of My Father's Dragon ! Each student made a representation of a character from the story and added it to our collaborative bulletin board!  Please
