Week of October 29th
Week of October 29th

We had a busy week of learning in first grade this week! In social studies, we learned about Johnny Appleseed and how he was a hero in his time. He worked hard to make sure settlers who moved out west had food to eat. Be sure to ask your first grader how he got his name!
In math, we worked on addition using cross number puzzles. We are becoming experts on how to explain a graph with shapes using addition sentences.
We read parsha Chayei Sarah. We met Rebecca who went on to become Issac's wife. Rebecca was a caring and kind woman who took care of others and animals. The first graders brainstormed words to describe her and drew pictures of how they take care of animals just like Rebecca.
During writer's workshop we have been finishing up our stories. The first graders have been working through the writing process and are excited to publish their stories with a cover next week! We will be sharing them with one another.
We talked about characteristics of a hero. The first graders came up with excellent definitions of the word and people in our past and in our present who are heroes.
We loved participating in a building challenge with our reading buddies. The first and fourth graders moved through five building centers and were faced with the task of creating a tall tower with a sound foundation. Be sure to check out pictures in this week's photo album!
Shabbat shalom!
