Another busy week in 5th grade. In math, we worked hard on large digit multiplication, learning more than one way to approach such problems. All kids are able to use an area model to generate partial products to solve multiplication problems. We were all exposed to the traditional algorithm for multiplication (the way you all learned in school). Some students feel comfortable with this method, and some not yet. Don't worry - they will work on this more in 6th grade! In Social Studies, we started a new unit on Ancient Egypt. This week, we explored books and videos to introduce us to this civilization. Ask your students what they read and learned about on Epic. In Science, we finished our research papers in preparation for our Science Fair projects. Students worked with such focus and diligence on this most demanding task for a 5th grader. We were proud of each and every one of them. Finally, on Friday, we were treated to an engaging story writing workshop by Mark Peter Hughes, author of Lemonade Mouth, A Crack in the Sky, and other books. Students made up and shared silly, fun story starters - ask them about this! - and learned the cardinal rule of story writing: "Show, Don't Tell".
