We spend a lot of time this week for our Mesopotamia test this morning. After a discussion about effective study methods, students worked with partners to make study guides based on materials we had put together for them. Fifth graders had plenty of time to study in school with a partner, so don't worry if they didn't review much at home! At this stage of their development, we are teaching them HOW to study and know that they might not be as effective at home.
Our other big task this week was to start researching for our Science Fair projects. This research is to help us get background on our topics to inform our hypothesis and our testing. This is hard work for 5th graders, and we provide lots of structure and guidance to help them. We appreciated the extra hands and support of Jen Blum, Julie Levine, and Marlene Moyer to help students through this process. We are so proud of their efforts and focus this week.
In math, we've been working on multiplication again, working towards the "standard" algorithm of multiplying that you were all taught in elementary school. Today, we learned that multiplying a two digit by two digit number consists of 4 separate products that are often combined into 2 to produce a shorter record of the calculation.
Looking forward to the Chanukah concert this afternoon! Chag Sameach to all.
