Week of December 17th and Design Day!

First graders continued to learn about different kinds of shelters this week in Social Studies! After listening to the story Building an Igloo by, Ulli Steltzer, students made booklets that describe the steps in making an igloo. Ask your child what a keystone is!
Later in the week students learned about different shelters for animals. They worked in partnerships to carefully tear paper to made shelters for a specific animal. The groups either had a bat, ant, beaver, hermit crab, or a bird. Check out our new bulletin board to see their amazing artistic creations!

It's Design Day! Students were a given bracelets with 3 clear beads yesterday. They were told the beads will change color, and they needed to figure out why. This morning, students discovered that the beads change color from the UV light from the sun.  The students were given the task to make beaded animals with pipe cleaners, and then began the process of creating a shelter with a partner, to protect the animals from UV light. We tested their shelter with the help of a UV light. Ask your child what animal they created and what type of shelter they made!
