Fifth Grade Leaves Ancient Egypt and Enters Ancient Greece

This week, we finished up our Ancient Egypt unit by creating a game board about an Egyptian innovation. Groups of students worked together to teach us in a game form about one particular innovation, including hieroglyphics, pyramids, math, calendar, boats, papyrus, and shaduf. They were so prepared when they took their final Egypt assessment! Without a moment's rest, we began our Ancient Greece unit, as students explored physical and on-line books about the topic and generated questions. We teachers were thrilled to hear students ask about ideas  related to our essential questions for the year: "How does where you live affect how you live?" and "How do legacies from earlier civilizations influence us today?"
Our Greece unit connects directly to the Language Arts book we are reading, The Lightning Thief, so students already have some background knowledge about Greek gods. Where we left off in the book this week, Percy had just learned that he was the son of Poseidon, one of the "The Big Three".
In math, students finished up their decimal unit with a final assessment. We were thrilled with how well they learned this complex material! We started our division unit mid-week, probably one of the most challenging of the year. Don't be surprised if they come home with a completely different method for computing quotients than you learned in school! This is an important step towards getting them to long division. Importantly, they learned that multiplication and division are intricately connected, and in fact, "un-do" each other.
And in a final note, Science Fair testing is well underway, with bacteria growing, teeth being whitened, and materials being tested for friction. Thank you to the parents who've come in to help - what a resource for us and the students!
Shabbat Shalom and have a great weekend.
