What's New in Grade Two: 1/7-1/11

To start off this week's blog, here is a note from Stephanie and Shirel:

Dear Second Grade Parents,

Please join us on Thursday, January 17th, at 2:10 in the theater, for our annual K – 5 Assembly celebrating the life and birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the impact of the civil rights movement! At this time, each grade will present a piece that is either a song or choral reading that they have been working on with Morah Shirel in music class.

Our assembly will be inspired by singing, video clips, a choral reading, a fairness March and a dramatization.

We look forward to sharing this important and inspiring program with you.

B'kavod,
Stephanie Rotsky  and Shirel Gidekel

Our bloggers this week are Hunter and Shayna!

Favorite part of the week:
Shayna: I liked when we received our biographies of who we are going to study for the Wax Museum. I will be researching Clara Barton, who created the American Red Cross.

Hunter: My favorite part of the week was also getting our biographies. I will be studying Albert Einstein. I am excited to learn more about him.

Reading:
Shayna: In my book group, we are reading the book Shelter Pet Squad. It's about a character named Susanna who is part of the Shelter Pet Squad, and she makes things for the pets. Some book group jobs I had this week were Visualizer, Feelings Detective, Predictor, and Question Creator.

Hunter: I am also reading Shelter Pet Squad. My favorite character is Susanna because she makes treats for golden retrievers and my cousins have a golden doodle.

Math:
Shayna: In math, we have started learning about fractions. I like getting to choose what activity I can do each day using my choice folder.

Hunter: My favorite activity I have done so far is making a fraction pie.

Science:
Shayna: This week, we have been doing experiments with water. On Wednesday, we used ice, hot water, and a plastic bottle to make rain in the bottle. The ice represented a cloud, and hot water represented a heated body of water. Some of the hot water evaporated, and caused the ice to drip down, showing condensation. The experiment was really fun. At the beginning of the week, we conducted another experiment in which we tested several materials to see which materials would make a good raincoat, by testing which materials would absorb or repel water. I tested tin foil, wax paper, construction paper, writing paper, bubble wrap, paper bags, plastic bags, and cardstock. I decided to use wax paper and plastic bags in my raincoat because they repel water most effectively.

Hunter: My favorite experiment we did this week was making it rain inside of a plastic bottle. It was very exciting to see the ice act as the cloud and to see the ice and the hot water create rain.

Favorite book:
Shayna: My favorite book this week is one I am reading at home. It is called Jojo and BowBow Take the Stage

Hunter: My favorite book is one that I have been reading at home this week. It is part of the Captain Underpants series.
