Fun with Different Fibers

Five thousand years ago, a young Chinese empress witnessed a cocoon from a mulberry tree fall into her cup of hot tea. This legend serves as the origin of how silk thread was discovered. In class, each child replicated this story by soaking a real silkworm cocoon, then “reeling” the softened silk thread onto a stick! Students also learned about the lifecycle of the silkworm.

First Graders examined Alpaca, Angora, Cashmere, and Linen fibers.

Students began weaving on cardboard looms this week!
