Mrs. Glanz and Mrs. Packer's 5th Grade
Our kids discussing the weekly precept
This week, we dove with gusto into our Ancient Greece unit. Ask your child what a “land island” is, and why these were important in Ancient Greece. We learned about Ancient Greek religion, scientific discoveries, and the beginnings of philosophy. We started a “Greek Innovations and Achievements” board in our classroom, adding philosophy, math, and science so far. At the end of the week, we learned about Athenian daily life. Ask your child who they chose to write about in their “Day in the Life” assignment.
In Language Arts, students are meeting in groups to discuss and digest the whirlwind adventures of Percy Jackson and friends. The gods, of course, play a role in the story, dovetailing nicely with what we are learning about in Social Studies.
Science Fair testing is moving along. Again, thank you so much to those parents who have come in to help - we couldn’t do it without you! Students are moving at their own pace, some finding they need to retest or rethink their procedure. That’s what science is all about!
Finally, in math, we’ve been in groups with different teachers continuing our exploration of division. All students know how to solve a division problem using the “partial quotients” method. It’s complex, and there are a lot of steps to remember, but they’re getting there! At the end of the week, we starting exploring remainders. Ask your child how to express a remainder as a fraction, and what different ways we can interpret remainders in a word problem.
Shabbat Shalom and have a great weekend!
