Week of February 11th
The Parsha this week includes instructions for the Israelites to create the Ner Tamid to hang in front of the Ark. First graders sketched the Ner Tamid in the Beit Midrash.
First graders got to examine and pull apart the fibers of a real cotton boll. They were excited to feel the seeds inside of the flower. First graders learned that most t shirts are made of cotton. Check out our woven cotton t shirts on display in our classroom.
In math, children examined the value of cuisinaire rods.
On Wednesday, first graders worked with their reading buddies and picked out fabric,
folded, cut, and sewed winter fleece hats!
Each child got a chance to “drive” a sewing machine
with a teacher’s help! As
part of our clothing study, students fulfilled the mitzvah of G’milut Chasidim
(Act of Loving Kindness). These hats will be donated to JFS Metrowest Clothing Closet,
which supports many refugee and immigrant families. This week's Torah parsha, Tetzevah, focuses on G-d’s selection of Aaron, Moses’ brother, to be the first high priest. Aaron’s job was to care for the Mishkan, the place of prayer. The wardrobe of the high priest is explained in explicit detail. Based on artist renderings of the high priest’s garb, first graders recreated the intricate “breastplates” or choshen, worn by Aaron and his sons. Decorated with 12 stones and bound by braided cords, students designed their own versions! Look for these on display in our classroom!
