What's New in Grade Two: 1/28-2/8

This week's bloggers are Eli and Asher!

Math:
Eli: In math this week we are working through our geometry unit. We did activities on our Choice Boards, so I got to choose which activities I wanted to do. One of my favorite activities was making 3D shapes using marshmallows and toothpicks. I made a cylinder, a cube, a triangular prism, and a rectangular prism.

Asher: My favorite activity we did this week in learning about geometry was also building the marshmallow creations. I built a hexagonal prism, a triangle, and a pentagonal prism.

Science:
Eli: This week we started learning about the food chain. We made paper food chains showing the links between producers and consumers. On my food chain, I had a killer whale at the top of my food chain, which eats a shark, the shark eats a big fish, the big fish eats the baby fish, the baby fish eats seaweed, and the seaweed gets energy from the sun.

Social Studies:
Eli: We started learning about economics this week. We also learned about producers and consumers in economics. Producers are people that grow or make goods, and consumers buy the goods or services.

Asher: In economics, I learned about wants and needs. A need is something that you need to survive like food or shelter, and a want is something that you want to have around but don't need, like a new pair of shoes.

Writing:
Eli: We learned about new ways to plan a fiction writing piece this week. I am working on a story called Bob Went Skiing, the sequel to Bob Wants a Friend. I really like writing fiction stories. They are more exciting because you can decide what happens, and you can be the boss.

Asher: I am on the final draft of a story about Munster, Indiana. I wrote about my family there. I am excited to publish it.

Reading:
Eli: I am reading the book Being Teddy Roosevelt in my book group this week. The main character, Riley, is writing a biography and he gets Teddy Roosevelt as his assigned person. It's similar to our Wax Museum Project that we are also working on.

Favorite Part of the Week:
Eli: My favorite part of the week was learning about food chains in science.

Asher: My favorite part of the week was reading Being Teddy Roosevelt during book groups.
