Fifth Grade Update

Mrs. Glanz / Mrs. Packer
It's been a busy couple of weeks in 5th grade as we begin final units and ending projects.
Yom Ha'atzma'ut last week ,was a full day of design thinking and building (see pictures) as students worked on addressing specific issues around climate change as it relates to our environment here at Rashi. This week, students continued thinking through the design process as they began a robotics project in small groups to wrap up our study of plants, trying to portray one stage of the plant lifecycle.
In reading, we finished Number the Stars and took our final test this week. We are well into our Literature Circle unit. Students are reading one of three books and completing weekly jobs to help guide their book group discussion.
As we near the end of our Holocaust unit, students learned the survival story of a real child during this time, as well as watched an incredible video, called The Pigeon, about an ordinary woman whose courage and quick-thinking in one particular moment during this time period saved a man's life. Through this story, and others we've learned about, we thought about what are the qualities that define an upstander. In coming weeks, we will be learning about more survival stories, as well as completing a final project.
In math, we finished our unit on probability and started a new one today on graphing and data.
Finally, we've read some books this week to help us begin to think about LGBTQ rights and equality in preparation for the Pride Parade in early June. Likewise, our precept this week
leant itself to a discussion of these issues.
Enjoy the photos of our students' creative
design projects. Next week, we will have
photos of their robotics projects.
