This week was truly special. To conclude the comprehensive Holocaust unit, our students completed their well thought out and sincere final projects as well as a final written reflection about what they want to remember. We are really thrilled with their work as it reflects how seriously each child took this
learning as well as how each has grown as a student this year.
As a result of Akea's report, we found out that there is a Jewish Heritage Museum in Mystic Connecticut that includes one of the boats that were used to ferry Jews from Denmark to Sweden during WWII. Perhaps some of you will want to visit it this summer!
There were also several lessons that linked the end of WWII and the establishment of the State of Israel. The first was a wrap up of WWII which included short videos of key events during the war- the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the D-Day invasion which paved the way of victory for the Allied Forces, and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The next lesson was about the DP camps that were flooded with survivors of the war. Each student was given the identity of real survivor and they were visited by "representative of the Haganah" who encouraged them to leave the DP camps for Eretz Yisrael where they could start a new life free of anti-semitism. Next, we did a reenactment of Aliya Bet, the illegal immigration to Eretz Yisrael. Some boats were able to enter (those carrying orphans of the war) while others were stopped by the British and arrested or sent to DP camps in Cyprus or even back to Germany! The final lesson was about the Partition Plan to divide Mandate Palestine into a Jewish and a Palestinian country. Students responded in writing to the positions of Arabs countries, the American State Department, Jews around the world including Holocaust survivors, and Jews already living in pre-state Mandate Palestine. Next, we did a reenactment of the November 1947 U.N. vote about the Partition of Palestine with the help of video of the proceedings. The kids were visibly excited to be a part of this historic event. Finally, we viewed a video of David Ben Gurion declaring statehood in May, 1948.
This morning we were blessed with a very special visit from Talia Wilk's grandparents, Laszlo and Vera Adler, who told their stories of survival in Hungary during the Holocaust. It was so moving to hear from them, especially after all that we have learned during the last few months. The 5th graders will definitely remember this unique visit. We truly thank the Adlers for coming to speak with our students.
Have a great weekend and enjoyable Shavuot.
