January 17, 2020
This week was full of learning and fun in first grade!Language Arts: We learned all about the suffix -s in FUNdations. The first graders know how to identify the base word and add on the suffix -s to make an object more than one. Be sure to ask your child to show you how to mark up words with a suffix.
Jewish Studies: Our weekly parasha introduced the class to the second book of the Torah, Shemot. We began to discuss Moses and the amazing events of his life. The class was mesmerized to learn the details of his upbringing and the miracle of the burning bush. Students will continue to learn this fascinating story in the coming weeks.
Social Studies: During social studies, we explored different types of shelters. We read the book Building a House and the first graders created their own version of the story. We also discussed igloos and the process to build this type of shelter.
Maya and Yahav visited our class this week to teach us about heroes in Israel. We learned about heroes from history and current heros. The first graders shared a hero from their own lives, please ask your child who they spoke about during our class discussion.
We learned about the hero Ruby Bridges. In the 1950's, Ruby was a first grader living in the south. We had a wonderful conversation about Ruby being a hero in her time because she stood tall and fought for what she believed in which was attending school to get the best education possible.
It was wonderful learning together during our Family Education Program on Tuesday. The first graders were proud and excited to share the learning happening in our classroom with you!
