A Week in First Grade

Language Arts: During our FUndations lessons this week the first graders practiced writing words with suffixes, sorting words with suffixes, and using words with suffixes in sentences. We also learned five new trick words, including the question words who, what, when. 

Math: In math this week, we focused on halves and wholes. The first graders practiced writing fractions, drawing fractions, and identifying fractions. We also played the game "Meet in the Middle" using a large number line. 

Tamchui: This week we were visited by members of the 6th and 7th grade classes who taught us about two organizations, Boston vs. Bullies and Al Sato Animal Rescue. The mission of Boston vs. Bullies is promoting kindness and standing up for one another. This organization is connected to The Sports Museum in Boston. Al Sato is an organization based out of Puerto Rico and is focused on providing care and forever homes for animals in need. Mr. Roberts, a fifth grade teacher at Rashi shared his experiences about working with this amazing group!

Did you know that the Rashi School has been a member of The Massachusets Educational Theater Guild since 2003?  The Rashi Middle School Theater Company has been participating in the State Drama Festival for over 14 years.  We have had over 40 Rashi Middle School students stand and receive an All-Star Recognition Award at the festival over the years,  in the areas of Acting, Lighting Design, Scenic Design, Sound Design and even 2 students as Live Musicians!  There are over 40 Middle Schools around the state that participate and Rashi is one of the Host Sites for the Festival this year!  The exciting part of festival is watching other Middle Schools perform and knowing that in is almostly completely student run.  If you haven't seen a festival come and visit on Sunday, April 28th from 9 AM - 6 PM. Behind the Scenes of Rashi Theater

Rashi Middle School Students are busy working on the upcoming play "A Wrinkle in Time" to be presented on November 16-17th.  Students are able to work behind the scenes by signing up for two different in school MS electives classes.  The Tuesday elective "Props and Costumes" and the Friday elective "Technical Theater Design" have been working the last few weeks designing for the performance.  Students in the electives have identified the costume, prop and scenery pieces that they are working on for the eight week electives.  Using Design Thinking they have started the process by learning the wants and needs for a show and talking to the Directors (their clients) to understand the vision for the show.   The start of the process includes research using the script to learn about needs for the design and the internet to learn about the time period of the 80s  for the show settting.  The students also created a Mood Board for costume inspiration.
