Week of January 21-24 in Corey Roberts' Classroom

January 24, 2020

Though it was only four days of school this week, we managed to fit a lot of learning in!

Language Arts: During FUNdations time, we did some more work on the suffixes "-s" and "-z". In our writing blocks, we introduced a new unit! We discovered that everyone is an expert on something, and they will now get the opportunity to teach their classmates "how-to" do something. Ask your child: what are transition words? Why is it important to include them in a "how-to" book?

Social Studies: We finished our unit on shelters by looking at different types of animal homes. The first graders worked in partners to create collages of beaver, bat, ant, hermit crab and bird homes. We also learned that some people aren't lucky enough to have a warm, safe house to go home to everyday, sometimes because of situations they can't control, but they often still have the love of their family. We created a list of what homes are filled with and created homes to display in our classroom. Stop by and check them out!
Ask your first grader: What animal shelter did you create? Who did you work with?

Tamchui: Tamchui 2020 is well under way! We learned about the first of three organizations, The Nature Conservancy. We met Kim Lutz, a representative from the organization, who taught us a little about the environment and how soil, trees, rocks, and animals are all connected. A team of eighth graders came in to introduce the Nature Conservancy and got us thinking about many different ways we could help the environment in our daily lives.
Ask your child: What idea did you draw about?

Ask your first grader: What is happening in the photo below?
Why is Josh (the 8th grader in the picture) so surprised?!
