Our Week in First Grade

February 28, 2020 We have had a great week back in first grade! We began celebrating the month of Adar, practiced new words in FUNdations , and talked about the importance of clothing and fabrics in Social Studies. Another highlight of the week was meeting with our tribes! The first graders learned four new glued sounds (ank, ink, onk, unk). We practiced writing and marking up words on white boards and in our FUNdations journals. Be sure to ask your child the sound and key word for each new sound!  Writing: What is something you know how to do? The first graders are working hard on writing their own "How To" book. What's New in Grade Two 2/25-2/28 We have had a fun and busy week. We have continued to learn and interpret more Nisim B'kol Yom (daily blessings) in Jewish Studies. In math we are studying multiplication and its connection to repeated addition. On Wednesday, we had our third Tribes meeting of the year. Ask your child what they did with their Tribe. In science we began our study of water by playing a game of charades. Ask your child what they acted out. On Thursday we hypothesized how many drops of water could fit on a penny. We discovered that it is not so different from how many drops fit on other coins. Why is that? We are beginning to learn about the concept of surface tension and will continue to learn more next week. One student said, "It's like the water droplets are holding hands." Questions to ask your child: 1) Why was Joseph in prison? 2) Why was Joseph "unlucky?" 3) What game did you play to learn about the amount of water and land in our world? 4) What is the difference between a map and a globe? 5) Why are maps and globes important? 6) What activity did you do in your tribe this week? 7) What animals do owls eat and what activity did you do with a flashlight? 8) What are the parts of an owl's body? Learning about mirror image (symmetry) Mirror image (symmetrical) patterns Crazy Hair Day! We acted like owls, searching for food in the moonlight. Each table counted up the number of animals they found around the room.
