February Begins in First Grade
February 3- 7, 2020
This week was marked by Tamchui donations, thinking about hats, exploring on the playground, and spending time with our fourth grade buddies. Read on for a little more detail about each of these!
As part of our unit on clothing, the first graders listened to the story Jennie's Hat by Ezra Jack Keats. We noticed the way he made his illustrations for the story through paper collaging. Each student then created a small tile using tissue paper, wallpaper scraps, buttons, and feathers which were then collaged together in our own version of Jennie's hat!
During FUNdations last week and this week, in addition to more practice with the suffix "s" and the trick words here, there, where, who, what, and when, we looked at two different books about caterpillars, one narrative and one non-fiction. We talked about the similarities (they share the same topic and both books show the transformation into a butterfly) and differences (one is a made up story, one used real photographs to look closely at a caterpillar) between the two texts. As we were talking, a few of the first graders mentioned some interesting cocoons they had noticed outside on the playground. It was a relatively warm day, so we decided to put on our coats and go outside for a closer look!
We have still not been able to identify what type of animal made these. Do you know?
Finally, this week was Tamchui donation week! During our time with our fourth grade buddies this week, the first graders Go Noodled, read books, made bees and counted chips.
Ask your child: Which activity did you do with your buddy? Which Tamchui cause did you connect to most and why?
