Red Fish and Speed Dating

Red Fish and Speed Dating

Dear Parents,

Speed Dating
This morning we had our first experience of stepping into the shoes of someone else by becoming characters from the book, Wonder.  After doing some writing from that character's point of view, we did an activity called speed dating in which each student interviewed another and tried to figure out which character he/she was pretending to be based on the answers.

In Social Studies, we started learned that prehistory is the time before written records and what tools archeologists use to learn about that period. We look forward to seeing our students' timelines.

In Science, students conducted an experiment to try to figure out what causes red cellophane fish to curl up and flop around.  Students mostly hypothesized that heat caused the movement and used materials such as oil, liquid soap, hot and cold water, and even a hair dryer to gather their data. Though their results may not have been conclusive, it was very exciting to do an experiment and everyone learned that it is very hard to control all variables.  ( The actual reason for the phenomenon is that cellophane is hygroscopic,  meaning that it likes moisture. So it attaches to slightly moist hands which we all have.  On the other hand, the cellophane is very thin. So, the air currents in the room, dry the cellophane very quickly. What is happening when the fish curls and uncurls is that it is getting wet and almost immediately drying- causing it to flop around. WOW!)
