Preparing for a Joyous Sukkot
Wishing you all a Chag Sukkot Sameach!
To prepare for Sukkot, we read Tamar's Sukkah and Sammy Spider's First Sukkot. We learned about some of the symbolism connected to the lulav and etrog and we created decorations for Rashi's sukkah! (We will hang those as soon as they're dry!) The children also love to play in our classroom sukkah and to fix it when it falls!
We met Bar and Shira, Rashi's Shin Shins. The Shin Shins are high school graduates from Israel who defer their service in the army and spend a year in the U.S, serving as ambassadors and teachers of Israel. They showed us where Israel is located on a world map and where their home city of Haifa can be found. To help us get to know them, they taught us some fun games, including Crockodilly Oh My! Be sure to play the video!
As we prepared for Yom Kipor, the Kindergartners were fascinated to hear the Torah story of Jonah and the Whale. We have a poem/chant and activity that reinforces some of the story and allows for creative movement, while serving as a reading tool. You can have your child teach you the chant and read or identify the words that are on the back of their project, which will come home on Friday. (P.S. We realize that a whale is not a fish... that's another lesson.)
Jonah, Johah,
What will you do?
A great big fish has eaten you!
I''ll move like this! I'll move about!
I'll pray that G-d will get me out!
Day 1, Day2, Day 3,
You're free!
