Curriculum Spotlight:Social Studies

How do human behavior and geography interact?

Recently, our classes looked at a physical map of a mystery country (in this case, Peru), and discussed what a physical map shows us. Next, we talked about human needs vs. wants. Then, we studied the population density of Peru to confirm our ideas about where people would live, based on the physical characteristics of the country in question and our discussion of human needs vs. wants.

During our next lesson, students created their own physical map of a hypothetical country. They used information from that map to develop theories as to where early settlers of their country would live. Based on these theories, students created population density maps of their countries.

Next, students completed an Elaborated Paragraph Organizer (from our EmPOWER program), and wrote a paragraph about why people lived where they did in their country.
