Food in the Library? Thinking About Gratitude

Kindergarten students spent the last several weeks in the library reviewing the Birkat Hamazon prayer, our Grace After Meals.  Rashi students sing this blessing every day after lunch, and our youngest students practiced the words in the library, a smaller and less overwhelming space than the chadar ochel (dining hall). Even more importantly than learning the words, we want our children to understand why we recite this prayer every day.  We read several books and did some fun activities to help the children think about where their food comes from, and all the reasons we are thankful for having enough food (and what we can do to help those in need).  In addition to being grateful for the wonderful earth and thinking about how to take care of it so we can grow delicious food, we also thought about all the people involved in getting food to our tables, from the farmers to the produce packers to the truck drivers to the store shelvers. The kindergarteners completed the unit by decorating their own Birkat Hamazon cards.
