Week of October 30th-November 3rd
This week we would like to give a window into our science and social studies curricula! We began the week by beginning our study of the planets and creating mnemonic devices to memorize the order of the planets by their distance from the sun. Some fun examples include "My Very Exciting Mother Just Sat Under Napkins" and "My Very Expert Monkeys Juggled Super Unusual Necklaces"!
We continued our study of the planets by working in partners to do research on the computer. Students looked for the size, amount of moons, and amount of rings of each planet in addition to other fun facts. Ask your child if any information about the planets surprised them!
This morning the class ventured outdoors with inflatable planets in hand to demonstrate the distance between the planets! Students stood in the field holding models of the planets with approximate distances in between them. Ask your child what determines the length of a year for a planet and why Neptune's year is much longer than Mercury's.
Enjoy some videos from this week's social studies design challenge. The two 3rd grade classes combined to create their very own version of john boats, motor boats used in the Florida Everglades to navigate the shallow waters. Students worked in pairs to design boats out of tape, straws, plastic cups, and plastic wrap which could hold 25 or more pennies in a tub of water for 10 seconds.
