Economics Unit
This week, the second graders started a new unit on Economics! To start, we spoke about what that word might mean and will continue to define it as we learn more.
Our first lesson began with a discussion on wants vs. needs. We talked about some of our needs as human beings and the difference between a want and a need. The children came up with a list of wants and needs and had a strong understanding of the difference between the two.
Following that, we talked about goods vs. services. To understand these concepts we read two books; one about goods and one about services.
Arthur's Pet Business allowed us to understand a bit more about what a service is and we brainstormed some other services that exist.
To understand more about goods, we read the book "A Cup for Everyone" in which a young penguin creates mugs for customers at his father's store. The children did a great job deciphering between the two (goods and services) and participated in a word sort to determine what would be considered a good and what would qualify as a service.

Ask your child to notice if there are any services that your family uses or any goods that you often have to purchase for your home. Our next lesson will be about made vs grown.
