Week of January 8th

Week of January 8th

This week, our focus has been getting back into school routines, learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. and his impact on our country today and fairness.

ASK YOUR CHILD:

1) Who was Dr. Martin Luther King?  What did he want to change in our country?  Even though he isn't alive anymore, what has changed in our world because of him?
2) ...about stuffed animal day.
3) ...about Henri's Important Person Activity
4) What is your part in the play?  How would your animal move?
5) What were the meanings of Joseph's dreams?

Thank you to Dara and David Grossman for coming in to read a story in honor of Ian's 6th birthday.   Happy Birthday Ian!

Thank you to Henri's parents, JP and Gail and his brother, Albert for doing a beautiful lesson about kindness. The children enjoyed decorating their kindness books and giving out kindness coins.

We have also begun our weekly reading program.  Some of the books that your child will bring home each week will be ones that we have read in class in small groups.  Some will be new to them.  (This week's have all been reading in guided reading groups.)

Here’s how our Reading Program works:

1)   Have your child read the book to a grown up during the weekend.

2)   Fill out the Reading Record Sheet in your child’s yellow folder.
This sheet should always remain in this folder.  Any comments you make on this form about your child’s reading will be helpful to us in choosing future books.

3)   Return the yellow folder, reading envelopes and book to school on Mondays. (Your child must return his/her envelope and reading book to get a new book for the next week.)

Most of the books sent home will be “just right” books.  Some may seem easy for your child while others a little challenging.  Having already read it a few times, it may (and should) appear that your child can read this book fairly easily.  Please know that they worked a bit to get to this point.  The first read involved a “just right” amount of struggle to promote growth.  Reading to you provides the opportunity for your child to practice and recognize his or herself as a reader.

We want this to be a positive experience for everyone so please let us know if there is any problem with a book.   And remember, “Easy reading makes reading easy” and repetitive reading increases fluency and automaticity.

HAVE FUN! J
