5th grade has Questions... lots of questions!

It is only by asking great questions that we can begin to find great answers. Our questions reflect our investment, curiosity and interests. When we ask better questions, we become better learners.

At the beginning of our unit on Ancient Egypt, 5th graders speed-dated several nonfiction books on Ancient Egypt. For each book, they had only a few minutes to skim through it, then they were challenged to summarize what they had learned, and create "thick"/open-ended and "thin"/closed questions.  Well over 100 great questions were generated in less than 20 minutes by our students, reflecting their individual interests and passions; archeology, sociology, psychology, comparative ethics, politics, engineering, math, physics and environmental science were all represented. Over the course of the unit, students learned about Ancient Egypt through the lens of their own questions and interests, gaining insights into the nuanced answers they then posted and shared in the hallway bulletin boards; Rashi students of all ages were observed pausing, reading and learning more from our 5th grade thinkers, teachers, and wonderers.

Questions enrich our learning here at Rashi. Questions enrich our lives.
