Skype Brings Japan to Rashi

Fifth grade students got the chance to meet Fumiko Ishioka on Thursday during a Skype call. Ishioka, who lives in Japan, is featured in the book, Hana's Suitcase, that we just completed. In this non-fiction book, Ishioka travels to three continents in her quest to uncover, and ultimately share, the story of Hana Brady. Hana and her brother, George, grew up in Czechoslovakia but were deported to concentration camps as children.

This is the third year in a row that fifth graders have been fortunate enough to Skype with Fumiko. It was fascinating to hear her story, and learn about how hard she worked to uncover Hana's story to teach Japanese children about the Holocaust and the importance of tolerance.

Ishioka has developed a relationship with Hana's brother, George, and because she will be visiting with him soon, she asked that we send her a photo of the fifth graders so she can share that with George.
