Fun with Different Fibers

Image
Five thousand years ago, a young Chinese empress witnessed a cocoon from a mulberry tree fall into her cup of hot tea. This legend serves as the origin of how silk thread was discovered. In class, each child replicated this story by soaking a real silkworm cocoon, then “reeling” the softened silk thread onto a stick! Students also learned about the lifecycle of the silkworm. First Graders examined Alpaca, Angora, Cashmere, and Linen fibers.  Students began weaving on cardboard looms this week!

If You Want To Go Owling, You Have To Be Quiet- "Owl Moon"

During the past week our focus was very intently on owls.  We had already learned a great deal about these amazing creatures by the time that Mark and Marcia Wilson brought their Eyes on Owls program to Rashi.  Kindergartners were so excited to be only feet away from the six owls and one falcon that we got to meet and learn about.  Later in the week we looked inside owl pellets and showed our learning about owls in a number of ways. The fresh snow this week also allowed us to find lots of fresh animal tracks.  We did tracking outside and indoors, as well, as you'll see when you check out our photo album!  Enjoy! https://photos.app.goo.gl/xEB9LGjZRCr6USb59 Have a wonderful vacation!  Shabbat Shalom! Ask your child: Who were the special visitors this week and what did they bring? (We had a program called, "Eyes on Owls" and they brought real owls for us to see and learn about.) "Hoo" was your favorite owl? Who was the Important Person this week and what activity did they do? (Maya S. and we made some really cool sensory bottles with her mom and sister). Ms. Berks did a special experiment with water in a bucket. What was the experiment and why did she do it?  Did you get wet? (She showed them how centrifugal force works which relates to how the earth spins so fast we don't feel it spinning and we don't fall off). What is going to happen at school in three more days? (The 100th Day of School!) What is the "Melt an Ice Cube" game and why did we play it? (To see what would melt ice the fastest) Is the earth made up of more land or water? Maya's mom, Samantha, and sister Margaux, came in to read a story and we made really coo
